John Dillwyn Llewelyn was married to Emma Talbot, a first cousin of William Henry Fox Talbot, and belonged to Talbot's close circle of friends who practiced photography. Interested in astronomy, botany, and science, Llewelyn pursued the art of photography starting with photogenic drawings in 1839. He was a founding member of the Photographic Society of London (later the Royal Photographic Society). The Horblit collection at Houghton Library holds numerous family albums belonging to Llewelyn as well as 43 individual prints by the photographer. Llewelyn created many images on his family estate in Wales as well as the Welsh coast.
